Sydney Fridge Repair Specialists
A household fridge depends on the refrigeration system, airflow, temperature sensors, fans, defrost components and electronic controls working together to maintain a stable temperature.
When one part of the system develops a fault, symptoms can include poor cooling, excessive frost, unusual noises, water leaks or food freezing in the fridge compartment.
Sydney Appliance Services provides mobile fridge repair throughout Sydney, diagnosing the cause of the problem before deciding which component requires attention. We repair:
Our technicians diagnose faults involving compressors, condenser systems, evaporators, fans, thermistors, thermostats, defrost components, door seals, drain lines and electronic control boards.
Know the Symptoms
Common Fridge Problems We Repair
Several refrigerator faults can produce similar symptoms, so proper diagnosis is important before parts are replaced.
Fridge Not Cooling
Poor cooling may relate to airflow, fans, temperature sensors, electronic controls, door seals or the refrigeration system.
Fridge Freezer Cold but Fridge Warm
If the freezer remains cold while the refrigerator compartment warms up, the problem may involve the evaporator fan, airflow path, air damper, frost build-up or defrost system.
Fridge Freezing Food
Food freezing inside the refrigerator compartment can be caused by incorrect temperature sensing, thermostat faults, airflow problems or electronic-control issues.
Fridge Temperature Fluctuating
Unstable temperatures may result from thermistor faults, fan problems, poor airflow, door-seal issues, defrost faults or electronic controls.
Fridge Leaking Water
Water leaks can be caused by a blocked or frozen drain line, defrost drainage problems, damaged water connections or condensation issues.
Excessive Frost or Ice Build-Up
Heavy frost may indicate a problem with the defrost heater, defrost sensor, thermistor, control board or door seal.
Fridge Making Unusual Noises
Buzzing, rattling, clicking, scraping or grinding sounds may come from fans, the compressor, relays or other moving components.
Fridge Running Constantly
A refrigerator that rarely switches off may be responding to poor cooling, damaged door seals, sensor faults, airflow restrictions or a refrigeration-system problem.
Fridge Fan Not Working
A failed evaporator or condenser fan can reduce airflow and affect temperature control.
Fridge Door Not Sealing Properly
Worn, damaged or distorted door gaskets can allow warm air into the cabinet, increasing run time and contributing to temperature problems.
Fridge Error Codes
Modern refrigerators may display error codes relating to temperature sensors, fans, defrost systems, doors or electronic controls. The code can help narrow down the affected system, but further diagnosis may still be required.

We diagnose faults including:
- Uneven cooling
- Temperature fluctuations
- Fan problems

- Frost build-up
- Control-board faults
Side-by-Side Fridge Repairs

How We Work
Fridge Parts & Fault Diagnosis
Modern refrigerators combine mechanical refrigeration components with airflow, sensors, defrost systems and electronic controls.
Our technicians diagnose faults involving the compressor, condenser, evaporator, evaporator fan, condenser fan, thermostat, thermistor, temperature sensors, defrost heater, defrost sensor, door gasket, drain line, start relay, overload protector, electronic control board / PCB, air damper and refrigeration circuit.
A symptom such as poor cooling does not automatically mean the compressor has failed. Airflow, sensors, fans, defrost components and electronic controls should also be considered during diagnosis.
Compressor & Freezer
Fridge Compressor, Regas and Freezer Problems
The faults people worry about most, and what is usually behind them.
Compressor clicks, hums or won't start
A fridge that hums, clicks and then shuts off, with the food slowly warming, often points at the start relay or the overload protector. Both are small, replaceable parts. A compressor that has seized is a different story, and we'll tell you which one you have before anything is ordered.
Compressor running all the time
A fridge that never switches off but never gets cold is usually fighting something else: a dead evaporator fan, a frosted-over coil, a dirty condenser or a door seal that no longer closes. Fixing the cause is cheaper than replacing a compressor that was never the problem.
Freezer iced up or frosting at the back
Ice building on the rear wall means the defrost cycle has stopped working. The defrost heater, the sensor or the control board is normally to blame, and a blocked drain makes it worse. We clear the ice, find the part and test the cycle before we leave.
Fridge warm, freezer still cold
When the freezer works but the fridge side doesn't, cold air isn't being passed across. That is usually a stuck damper, a failed fan or a frosted vent, not a gas problem.
Low refrigerant (fridge regas)
A fridge doesn't use up its gas. If the level is low, there's a leak somewhere, and topping it up without finding the leak just means the fault comes back. Refrigerant handling is licensed work in Australia, so we explain what a regas involves and whether it's worth doing on your fridge before anything is booked in.
Is a new compressor worth it?
On a younger, good-quality fridge, sometimes. On an older one the bill can creep towards the price of a new fridge, and we’ll say so plainly. Every visit is a flat $190 call-out with all the labour included, and any part is priced before it’s fitted.
Repair Or Replace
Is Your Fridge Worth Fixing?
Most household fridges are worth repairing. These are the signs we look at before we tell you which way to go.
Usually worth repairing when
- The fridge is under about 10 years old
- One part has failed: a fan, sensor, seal, heater or board
- The repair is well under half the price of a similar new fridge
- The fridge was cooling fine until recently
- Parts are available for the model
Replacing makes more sense when
- The compressor has failed on an older fridge
- There's a sealed-system or refrigerant leak
- Several expensive parts are failing at once
- The fridge is past 12 to 15 years and running hard
- The repair costs close to a new fridge
Not sure which side yours falls on? Ring us with the brand, model and what the fridge is doing. If we think replacing it is the smarter move, we’ll say so.
Keep It Running
Fridge Care That Actually Helps
Wipe the door seals
Every few weeks. Food residue stops the gasket sealing and warm air gets in.
Vacuum the coils
Twice a year, if your fridge has accessible condenser coils. Dust makes the compressor work harder.
Leave breathing room
Keep a few centimetres of gap at the back and sides so the fridge can shed heat.
Don't block the vents
Packed shelves stop air reaching the fridge section. Leave the vents clear.
Check the temperature
Around 3 to 5°C in the fridge and -18°C in the freezer is the usual target.
Keep the drain clear
If you see water at the back or ice on the rear wall, get the defrost drain looked at early.
